Frequently Asked Questions
Are you tracking me?
No, we are not. The microtag is only a piece of metal; it has no radio, no tracer elements, no phone, it has no way of tracking you.
What if the thieves want to remove all of the microtags?
A determined thief could find and remove all of the microtags in a few hours. But the thief will never know for sure if all the tags were removed. If he misses even just one microtag, that evidence can be used against him and he could go to jail. Most thieves are not careful enough or take enough time to find all the microtags.
If my belongings are stolen, how will the police know to look for the microtags?
You should tell them in the crime report you file. It will alert them to the fact that your property has been marked for possible return. If they contact us regarding your recovered property, we will contact you immediately.
What if I lose or forget my serial number?
The serial number is indicated on the information card and microtag container contained in your kit. We have your serial number only if you return your completed registration card or registered on the Internet. Of course, you can always read the microtags with a 40x jeweler’s loupe.
What if I don’t want to tell you my contact information?
We only have the information you provide us. If the police call us to ask about the owner of stolen property, we will contact you. We will not give out your contact information to anyone except when required to comply with a court order.
I don’t believe you can really write those tiny numbers. How can I read the microtags?
A 40x jeweler’s loupe is strong enough to read them. The loops are inexpensive and easy to purchase on the Internet.
What if I want more microtags with the same serial number?
We welcome repeat orders and will charge a modest customization fee to reproduce your current serial number. You can also order a second kit with a different serial number and register it as well.
Can I get microtags with something else written on them?
Yes. There is enough room on the microtag for about 30 characters (letters and/or numbers). The price for a custom inscription depends on the number of characters and the number of tags.
What if I sell my car?
You should notify the new owner about the microtags and give the registration card to the new owner. The new owner should register online. If you don’t know who will buy the car (for example it’s a trade-in at an auto dealer) then make sure the dealer keeps the registration card in the glove compartment.
What if the thief calls you to claim he owns the car?
We will not delete old information from our database. We will just add the information he gives us, including the phone number he called us from. The police would enjoy getting that information.
Will these microtags prevent theft of my car or other property?
We cannot make any promises about theft prevention. However thieves talk to each other about what works and what doesn’t. If a thief tells his buddies that he was convicted for stealing a car with microdots, the word will get around very quickly. You should display our product warning sticker on your car as a message to potential thieves. They will see it and likely walk away.
Will these microtags help recover my stolen car or other stolen property?
We cannot make any promises about recovery of stolen property. You must file a crime report with the police. You should include the tag number in the police report along with our website address www.mydatatags.com
Can I put these microtags on something other than a car?
Yes, we advise you to tag anything which is valuable. You should especially consider tagging items such as precious family heirlooms, expensive televisions, stereos, computers, laptops, snowmobiles, motorcycles, airplanes, tools, jewelry….almost anything can be tagged.
Can somebody else’s microtags have my serial numbers?
We never reuse a serial number. There are billions of potential serial numbers.
When and where can I buy them?
You can buy microtags right here on our website.
Who will you give my information to?
When you register your microtags you agree to the conditions by which we might give out your information. If a police officer calls us about your microtags, we will verify that officer’s identity. We will then contact you and provide the police officer’s contact information. Of course, we will comply with any subpoenas, giving out any information which is required by law and or court orders. Other than that, we will never give out any of your information.
How long will these microtags last?
The metal microtags should last 50 years. With no exposure to rain, water, and temperature extremes the adhesive should last years. Our tests began about 18 months ago and the adhesive appears unchanged. Constant exposure to water may significantly reduce the lifetime of the adhesive.
